Juan Ward (age 25) – Scientific Ship Systems Technician

Juan is part of a team responsible for the fitted scientific systems:

  • Echo sounders
  • Meteorological sensors
  • Water sampling
  • Data acquisition network structure
  • Magnetometer
  • Internet connection via satellite
  • DART satellite images on board
  • Event logging
  • Writing software for data analysis

The team also provide general IT support for scientists and crew. (Note: Juan has been extremely helpful getting me sorted for being able to blog and tweet – Thank-you!).

Juan has worked for NERC since July 2014 and loves his job. He enjoys the variety in his job, meeting new people and travelling to new places.

Read. Read widely and as much as possible. (I think this is great advice.) Juan’s favourite book is: Anna Karenina – Tolstoy, my favourite book is: A Suitable Boy – Vikram Seth.

  1. Reading – that’s great advice from Juan – and Angela, if you have read and enjoyed A Suitable Boy then I highly recommend A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, one of my favourite books.
